National Doctor’s Day is a day that recognizes and celebrates physicians for their hard work, dedication, and contributions to health and wellness throughout our communities.
This special day was first observed back on March 30, 1933 by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a doctor. Eudora Almond decided to mark March 30th as a day to honor physicians by sending out greeting cards and placing flowers on the graves of deceased physicians. In 1990, a legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate in order to establish a “National Doctor’s Day” which received immense approval from both chambers and on October of that same year President Bush signed the legislation into law. March 30th is forever designated as National Doctor’s Day.
The United States isn’t the only country that celebrates doctors. Countries all over the world such as Canada, Brazil, India, and Australia have designated days in the year that acknowledge and appreciate their country’s finest medical professionals.
Physicians face hardships everyday in their practices and with the advancement of modern medicine and the discovery of new diseases, being a doctor has never been more difficult. Working long, painstaking hours and acquiring countless patients with a number of illnesses, a doctors work often gets overlooked and unnoticed. It’s easy to forget that physicians prescribe more than just medicine, they provide hope and aspiration to patients and peers alike. It is eminently important for all of us to express our gratitude towards our doctors.
